Pliska. Castle and Bazilika

Pliska was the first capital city of Danubian Bulgaria. Spreading on an area of 23 sq km, it was larger than London and Paris of that time. The impressive remains of the old city can be seen at the reserve. There is a very well appointed museum and the remains of the Big Basilica – the most monumental Bulgarian medieval church.

Madara Archaeological Reserve

The national historic and archaeological reserve Madara presents beautiful rock formations and the remains of thousands of archaeological monuments and finds from six historical epochs. This is the reason for which Madara received the name "The Bulgarian Troy". The rock shelters and the springs below them served as temples for the living in the area tribes and peoples. One of the most important sights is the rock relief "Madarski konnik" ("Madara horseman"). It is one of the most significant monuments of the official old Bulgarian art, included by UNESCO in the list of the world cultural treasures.

Shoumensko Plato Nature Park

The Nature Park Shoumesnko plato is an attractive place for recreation, sport and tourism during the whole year. It has well developed infrastructure and numerous tourist trails which cross the park and lead to interesting and attractive nature formations, historic monuments, rock phenomena and so on. There are tourists’ shelters in the park and at places with panorama view there are alcoves, benches, tables and fountains.

Shumen Fortress

The Shumen Fortress has existed more than 3200 years. During 1444, it was destroyed and burned down. The Fortress is one of the most explored archaeological sites in the country. The fortress and the cultural architecture, homes and thousands of movable monuments bear record of the diverse functions during the different periods, predominantly during the time of the second Bulgarian kingdom. Today the Shumen fortress is exhibited as an open-air museum.
